Do you have a puppy or a young dog at home? Future dog athletes need a good training plan. Especially if you want to be active in dog sports, they need strong foundations right from the start. In cooperation with our Swedish Ambassadors Lilly & Tobias from Yes Dog Sweden we have prepared a new blog series called Kai’s Puppy Diary.
Follow along and train with your own puppy!
It is important not to overdo the physical training and let the puppy also have a „puppy life“. Kai would like to be an agility dog in the future. Together with Tobias & Lilly you can follow along what he learns at what age. Now, I will leave the short introduction of Kai up to Tobias.
Who is Kai?
”Meet my new Border Collie puppy – Nordic Paws Kai who is currently 16 weeks old! He is my third Border Collie and is the half-brother of Lilly’s border collie Tips, which is a large part of why I chose him.
He is a very high energy dog with a high work drive – just like Tips and exactly what I wanted. But he also has a gentle side and it is easy for him to relax once it is time for that. He gets along very well with all our other dogs and I really value the fact that we have a large pack of dogs that can live in harmony with each other without cages or barriers in the house.
For every dog that I and Lilly have, we have a separate plan and long term/short term goals. So obviously we gave Kai a plan even though the short-term goal is that he finds happiness in our pack, learn dog language and agility preparation like tugging, turning left/right. The long- term goal is the same of all of our dogs: when he is old, I can look him in the eyes and say, “we gave it our best”. But that is hopefully not in the near future.
Kai is so young that we still are getting to know each other, and he seems to be a fantastic, cool guy! Training wise you can see in the video that some of the things we are working on, but we are also training passivity, self-control and general tricks like sit, stay, lay down and nose touch in my palm. He is showing great potential and is quite a quick- learner. I absolutely love this dog and his willingness to work with me! Kai is also getting used to different environments, so he follows along to the stable where he meets humans, horses, dogs, cats, rabbits and chickens!”
Episode 1: Tugging & Basic Tricks
In the first Episode of the Puppy Diary you can see how Kai learns the secrets of tugging and first left/right turns around a cone. Make sure to keep the puppy sessions short with only a few repetitions and always keep it fun!
